The Seattle Seahawks announced they will be opening a concessions stand using Amazon’s “Just Walk Out” technology at Lumen Field this fall, the 15th such stand for Amazon in a stadium setting and the third venue in Seattle to embrace the hometown company’s technology.
Called “District Market,” the concessions stand at Lumen Field will be a bigger version of the Amazon stores, with not just drinks but also food and snacks for purchase. According to the Seahawks the stand was developed as a partnership with hospitality partner Levy and DBK Studio, Levy’s innovation studio. The stand is expected to be open in time for the Seahawks’ first regular-season game on Sept. 12, according to the team.
The Lumen Field store will also support the Amazon One system, which allows customers to sign up ahead of time and use the palm of their hand for authorization. Other customers at Just Walk Out stores can simply scan a credit card at the entry gate. Like the similar checkout-free technology stores from other providers like Zippin and AiFi, the Amazon Just Walk Out stores allow fans to enter, select the items they want, and leave, with billing taking place online.
When the Lumen Field store opens Amazon will have Just Walk Out technology in the city’s three main pro sports venues, including Climate Pledge Arena and T-Mobile Park.
Zippin, a San Mateo, Calif.-based startup, recently announced five new checkout-free stores at the Tennessee Titans’ Nissan Stadium, bringing its announced total to 30 stadium stores, which leads the marketplace. Amazon, with a recent announcement of three new “Just Walk Out” stores coming to Texas A&M’s Kyle Field, now has 15 announced or open stadium stores. And AiFi, another startup, announced a new store at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium, with promises of more announcements coming soon.
