In what Amazon said is a first for a sports stadium, Climate Pledge Arena is adding Amazon One devices to several non-Amazon concession stands in the venue, giving fans the option to “pay with their palm” instead of using a credit card.
While the Amazon One system is generally associated with the company’s “Just Walk Out” checkout-free stores, according to Amazon the company has used standalone Amazon One devices at some of its own grocery stores before. The Amazon One system involves customers having to sign up and associate a payment method with their palm, after which they can simply wave their hand above an Amazon One device to pay.
According to the company and the arena, there will be 18 Amazon One devices deployed and ready to use for the Seattle Kraken’s home game this weekend, at three different concession stands. Climate Pledge Arena also has four concession stands that use the Just Walk Out technology. According to Amazon, fans who have not yet signed up for Amazon One can do so at special kiosks at each of the four Just Walk Out stores at Climate Pledge Arena, as well as at enrollment kiosks that will be located outside the three stands with the Amazon One devices.
While Amazon and the arena bill the move as a way to make payments more convenient since fans would not have to carry a wallet or other payment information with them when purchasing concessions, the Amazon One system does not act as an age-verification system, so fans wanting to use Amazon One to purchase alcohol must still carry a valid ID. The Amazon One systems will be available at the Modelo Cantina, Metropolitan Grill and 1st Ave Nachos stands, according to Amazon and Climate Pledge Arena.
According to Amazon, the Amazon One expansion as a point-of-sale (POS) option at the venue is a collaboration between Amazon, Climate Pledge Arena hospitality partner Delaware North, the Seattle Kraken and Oak View Group, owner and operator of the arena.
