Company: Xtract One (formerly called Patriot One)
Product: Xtract One SmartGateway
What it looks like: Two thinner square poles, about four or five feet in height. Some systems have been customized to add additional components.
How it works: People walk between gates in single file. Devices can be kept in bags or pockets. Alerts are provided by sound and by LED panels on the towers as well as via a tablet or laptop used by staff.
Expertise: Xtract One was founded in 2016 with research partner McMaster University, a Canadian center for radar technology research led by Dr. Natalia Nikolova. The company says it has combined microwave radar technology with multiple sensor technologies and artificial-intelligence software to produce its latest products.
Profile: Xtract One, formerly known as Patriot One, is a startup with a device that is somewhat of a security scanning hybrid, one with walk-through capabilities but also a higher degree of scanning technology than competitors, according to company executives. Since the Xtract One’s SmartGateway still requires people to walk through its gates in single file, it may never approach the throughput of Evolv’s Express systems, though the company claims the SmartGateway system is still much faster at scanning fans than traditional metal detectors.
While the lesser line-shortening ability may have kept Xtract One as yet from winning larger-size venue deals, the company has been able to attract some heavyweight backing, including in February of 2023 when the company took a $10 million investment from an arm of Madison Square Garden in exchage for approximately 28 percent of Xtract One ownership. Xtract One also has a formal agreement with stadium ownership and management concern Oak View Group (OVG) under which OVG will be able to offer the Xtract One security scanners to the venues it owns or manages, most likely at a discounted rate.
Though it hasn’t been publicly announced yet, Xtract One SmartGateway systems are currently being used for security screening both at the Sphere in Las Vegas and at Madison Square Garden in New York, including for Knicks and Rangers games at the latter venue. According to the company there are approximately 37 arena, stadium or live event venues currently using Xtract One systems.
Publicly traded on the Canadian Toronto Stock Exchange, Xtract One reported revenues of approximately 3 million Canadian dollars for the financial quarter ending Oct. 31, 2023 — a leap up from the $427,000 Canadian revenues recorded for the like quarter in 2022. The company followed that up with another almost $3 million Canadian in revenues for the quarter ending on Jan. 31. Among recent venue deployment wins for Xtract One are the Moody Center arena on the University of Texas campus; Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs; and a commitment from CPKC Stadium, the home of National Women’s Soccer League team Kansas City Current, to use SmartGateway systems when the venue opens in early 2024.
Like the Evolv Express, the Xtract One SmartGateway system uses AI to learn about potential threats, and is software-upgradeable “to offer more in the future,” said Xtract One CEO Peter Evans in an interview. Evans also said future integrations into the SmartGateway platform could include cameras or ticketing technology.
“It’s a platform for innovation, not a one-trick pony,” Evans said.
