What tops the list of planned investments for stadiums the next year? According to the results of our 2022 Stadium Connectivity Survey, a majority of venues will be investing in more wireless connectivity, for both fan-facing services as well as back-of-house operations.
In a partnership with sponsor Verizon, in August and September of this year we reached out to the Stadium Tech Report audience and asked them to participate in our second Stadium Connectivity Outlook survey, which asked a wide range of questions about the current state of a venue’s connectivity, and where the venues, teams and schools would prioritize investments and strategies. Their answers are now available for you to read, in both a survey results format and an accompanying white paper that summarizes the data.

In a question that specifically asked “Which areas will you be making changes in your IT infrastructure to support growth or reduce operating costs in the next 12-18 months?” a full 58 percent of our respondents put “wireless in-building connectivity” at the top of their list. Another question about what was on the stadium’s roadmap for 2023 found the top two answers as “improve in-venue connectivity for fans” and “improve in-venue connectivity for operations.”
In some way, these responses are not a surprise since our reporting over the last year has shown that with the rapid move to digital solutions in ticketing and to cash-free concessions, even venues with good connectivity needed to add capacity. The good news is, with Wi-Fi 6 hitting its stride and new developments coming to make things like 5G shared DAS deployments a reality, venues have many choices to supplement their needs.

Thanks again to our sponsoring partner Verizon, and a special thanks to all the stadium technology professionals who lent their time and insights to make this survey and its results possible.
